  • Higher Ed: Education

Dr. Virginia Bastable has been the Director of the SummerMath for Teachers program at Mount Holyoke College since 1993 after working as a secondary mathematics teacher for more than twenty years. Dr. Bastable became engaged with the professional development of teachers of mathematics after attending the 1985 secondary SummerMath for Teachers institute. As director of the SMT program, she has had opportunities to design and conduct programs examining the learning and teaching of mathematics for in-service teachers, school administrators, pre-service teachers, and teacher-leaders. Since 1992, she has collaborated with Deborah Schifter of EDC, Inc. and Susan Jo Russell of TERC to produce the Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI) Professional Development Curriculum.

Drs. Bastable and Schifter have also designed and conducted DMI Leadership Institutes designed to provide support for teacher-leaders, math specialists, math coaches and others who work in school systems to help educators reconceive the way mathematics instruction takes place. In addition to supporting summer institutes, current projects include working with teachers of grades K-5 to explore how children encounter mathematical ideas that eventually develop into formal algebra and working with TERC on the Investigations curriculum. Dr. Bastable particularly enjoys helping others to discover their interest and abilities in mathematics, even if those interests and abilities have been blunted by past negative experiences with the subject.
